The historic vehicle community celebrates one of the most influential figures in the history of bus manufacturing, recognising his pioneering contributions to the industry and his lifelong commitment to preserving the legacy of historic commercial vehicles.
Pilsting, Germany – Pursuant to the nomination of the FIVA National Authority in Germany (‘ANF’) the Allgemeiner Deutscher Autombill-Club (‘ADAC,’), FIVA (Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens) has welcomed Dr.-Ing. h.c. Konrad Auwärter into its prestigious Hall of Fame, honouring a remarkable career that has left a lasting mark on the automotive industry and the international historic vehicle movement.
The recognition celebrates not only his outstanding contribution to the development of Neoplan into one of the world's most innovative and respected bus manufacturers, but also his tireless dedication to safeguarding the history, culture and technical heritage of commercial vehicles for future generations.
A legacy built on innovation and preservation
Combining engineering expertise, entrepreneurial vision and a lifelong passion for automotive heritage, Konrad Auwärter played a central role in the evolution of Neoplan, contributing to the development of low-floor buses, high-deckers and innovative integral body designs that helped redefine standards in passenger transport.
Beyond his industrial achievements, Auwärter has dedicated decades to preserving the history of commercial vehicles. Through his support for museums, international events, historical research and documentation initiatives, he has helped ensure that historic buses and commercial vehicles remain visible, operational and accessible to future generations.
For FIVA, his commitment reflects the importance of preserving not only historic vehicles, but also the engineering knowledge, human stories and cultural heritage they represent.
A ceremony in honour of Konrad Auwärter
The induction ceremony in Pilsting brought together representatives of FIVA and ADAC to honour Auwärter's achievements, highlighting both his pioneering role in bus manufacturing and his lasting contribution to the historic vehicle movement.
Karsten Schulze, ADAC Technical President, opened the ceremony by recalling the longstanding relationship between his family and the Auwärter company. His grandfather's experience as a bus operator provided a personal connection to a name that has been part of the history of passenger transport for generations.
Karlheinz Jungbeck, ADAC Tourism President and FIVA Vice President Culture, delivered the official laudation and presented Auwärter with the FIVA Hall of Fame Award. His tribute highlighted a lifetime devoted not only to technical and entrepreneurial achievements, but also to the preservation of historic vehicles, the sharing of knowledge and the promotion of automotive culture.
Speaking on behalf of the FIVA Utilitarian Commission, Timo Vuortio, FIVA Director of Utilitarian Vehicles, highlighted Auwärter's exceptional contribution to the international historic commercial vehicle community, particularly through his support for preservation initiatives, historical documentation and FIVA World Events.
His contributions include longstanding support for FIVA World Events dedicated to utilitarian vehicles, including those held in Panningen and Netphen, as well as initiatives to improve information on historic vehicle museums. He has also supported major documentation projects, including the international historic bus database, the publication Das große Oldtimer-Omnibusbuch and the activities of Interessengemeinschaft Historische Omnibusse International.
Preserving history through the FIVA ID Card
The ceremony also provided an opportunity to highlight the importance of the FIVA ID Card programme, an initiative that Auwärter has consistently supported as an essential instrument for documenting and preserving historic vehicles. Two exceptional vehicles received their FIVA ID Cards during the event: the Neoplan Typ Hamburg and the historic ADAC “Rolling Office” support vehicle.
Issued following a physical inspection in accordance with the FIVA Technical Code, the FIVA ID Card records a vehicle's technical characteristics and historical information, contributing to the independent documentation and recognition of automotive heritage.
The presentation of these two cards also symbolised the close cooperation between Auwärter, ADAC and FIVA, united by a shared commitment to ensuring that historically significant vehicles and the stories behind them are preserved.
Looking to the future while protecting the past
Auwärter's commitment to historic vehicles also extends to environmental sustainability. His pioneering use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) in his historic bus fleet reflects his determination to explore solutions that allow historic commercial vehicles to remain operational while addressing contemporary environmental challenges.
His approach demonstrates how preservation and innovation can coexist, ensuring that historic commercial vehicles continue to serve as living witnesses to the evolution of mobility and the technological progress that has shaped modern society.
An enduring legacy for future generations
Konrad Auwärter's induction into the FIVA Hall of Fame recognises not only his remarkable personal achievements, but also the essential role of historic buses and commercial vehicles within the world's automotive heritage.
FIVA warmly congratulates Dr.-Ing. h.c. Konrad Auwärter on this well-deserved honour and expresses its sincere gratitude for his decades of dedication to preserving and promoting our shared automotive heritage.
