This year’s FIVA World Motorcycle Event, hosted in the breathtaking region of Tuscany, Italy, was organized by ASI – Automotoclub Storico Italiano, and it could be summed up in just three powerful Latin words: Libertas, Aequalitas, Fraternitas.
Borrowed playfully by FIVA President Tiddo Bresters during the gala dinner, this French national motto became an unexpectedly fitting motto for our 2025 event. It described not only the atmosphere but also the emotional reality of the rally – in a world increasingly marked by division, tension, and even war near the borders of Europe, this rally created a rare space of human connection.
Surprisingly, what stood out most about this classic motorcycle rally wasn’t just the stunning views or vintage machines – it was the overwhelming sense of liberty and brotherhood. These weren’t abstract concepts, but something very real and tangible.
This year’s participation has been higher than ever, a true record in the history of FIVA World Motorcycle Rallies. 140 riders from 18 countries across multiple continents came together, and over four days, through long, sometimes challenging routes and breathtaking mountain passes – including climbs over 800 meters – a deep, unspoken bond formed. Especially for those riding pre-war machines nearly 90 years old, every kilometre was an adventure requiring attention, endurance, and mutual support.
And support came willingly. Fraternity, in its purest sense, shone through: if one broke down, others stopped to help. If someone struggled, they were never left behind. Riders with more mechanical know-how stepped in, and thanks to their help, many motorcycles returned to the road after a hiccup. It was unselfish, patient, and genuine – the kind of camaraderie we miss in today’s fast-paced world.
One logistical miracle deserves special mention. Escorting dozens of vintage bikes through ancient towns with narrow, medieval streets and modern traffic is no easy feat – yet the Italian motorcycle police performed this task with precision and style.
It felt like a state visit – traffic was paused, roads were cleared, and we glided through historic cities with the kind of protocol you’d expect for the Pope himself. It was a powerful example of what’s possible when passion and professionalism meet – even within today’s rigid European bureaucratic frameworks.
Amazingly, despite the demanding routes, there were no major incidents. Around 10 to 15 bikes were temporarily sidelined due to mechanical issues, with their riders continuing the journey on a support bus (originally intended for non-riding partners). Even in these cases, the spirit of solidarity prevailed – repairs were attempted on the spot, and many were successful thanks to the helping hands of fellow enthusiasts.
Let’s put one myth to rest: classic motorcycle rallies are not just for old-timers. This year, a strong group of young riders – including young women in beautifully recreated pre-war riding attire – joined the adventure. Their enthusiasm, skill, and endurance were inspiring. Most completed every stage of the rally, proving that the torch of heritage motorcycling is already being passed to a new, passionate generation. On top of that, a record number of female riders attended.
FIVA's mission to promote, protect, and preserve historic vehicles was once again fulfilled, alongside the Motorcycle Commission’s inspiring motto: "Classic Bike; Ride, Don’t Hide." But one more “P” was added this year – Progress, toward a sustainable future.
A highlight was the participation of our Motorcycle Commission member Maryam Talaee from Iran, riding a classic BMW sidecar powered by sustainable fuel. This innovation was made possible thanks to ASI and its Green Commission, and Maryam’s ride – alongside renowned Italian collector Benito Battilani and even FIVA President Tiddo Bresters – was met with smiles and admiration. Photos and videos captured this significant step forward, showing that historic vehicles can evolve without losing their soul.
The organiser and route planner, Palmino Poli, kept the itinerary a well-guarded secret during our Zoom meetings, despite our best efforts to extract hints. But what a journey it was! From Florence to Siena, Pisa, and Lucca, through ancient squares and along cypress-lined country roads, we experienced Tuscany in its full glory.
Even a sudden rainstorm during the final 50km of the first day couldn’t dampen spirits – instead, the scent of the soaked cypress forests added a poetic touch to our arrival in Siena. It is also worth mentioning the “gran finale”: two laps on the legendary Imola circuit, which left every rider beaming with smiles and emotion.
Every moment of this journey was captured by the superb FIVA and ASI photo-video team, who followed the rally with unwavering dedication. Their work will soon be unveiled – and we’re certain it will draw the admiration it deserves. Laszlo Tomcsanyi, FIVA Steward of the rally, kept a vigilant eye on the entire event and helped ensure it ran smoothly.
At the end of the rally, one thing was clear: this was more than a gathering of classic motorcycles. It was a message – of peace, joy, and shared humanity. As we rode through towns, people waved and smiled. We brought history to life, not in a museum, but on the streets, where it belongs.
In a time when the world can feel cold, disconnected, and even hostile, this rally showed that respect, kindness, and beauty still resonate. That’s our mission – and we’re committed to carrying it forward.
