Starting at the Kempinski Hotel the day after the Concours D’Elegance, this rally is a fun couple of days whereby the teams are not stressed to the limited but have plenty of time to enjoy the scenery as well. With a very clear road book with pictures and the well know pictograms, the stints of 70 to 150km are over good roads and can be followed also by those who are less familiar with these kinds of regularity rallies. With staff around that speaks English, any question can be answered and since there are a lot of volunteers as well, I’m sure the organization can even find you an on-board translator/guide if you would like to have one.The first day brought us to the Mutianyu Great Wall – To the northeast of Beijing in the Huairou district. Mutianyu Great Wall measures 2,250 meters in length, with an elevation of 535 meters. Studded all along the wall are 22 turreted-fortresses, and the Mutianyu section is accessible by cable cars from below. On the southeast side, there is one general gateway platform connecting three towers together, which is quite rare in the whole Great Wall, and on this platform, a reception was given for the participants, press, and others. The organizers of the Rally also provided a cheque to the chief [...]
La Festa Mille Miglia 2018, held in Japan, is now in its 21st year. As you can probably guess from the title, it’s a 1000-mile rally run along the lines of the current Italian 1000 Miglia and this year it started on 19 October in Tokyo, ending up in the same city on Monday 22 October.
A representative from FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles) attended as the FIVA Steward, and for the first time, La Festa Mille Miglia was chosen as one of this year’s 10 events at which a FIVA Best Preserved Vehicle award would be presented.
And the winner of the FIVA Best Preserved Vehicle trophy?
Whilst the FIVA Steward found it unusually hard to separate the many potential contenders, the trophy was finally awarded to the 1951 Panhard Dyna X 110/X85 owned by Yoshinobu and Miyoko Kato. This model of the marque is affectionately known to aficionados as ‘Louis XVth’ thanks to its marvellous baroque curves.
While the Panhard Dyna might perhaps not be every enthusiast’s first choice for competing in a 1000-mile road rally, the diminutive Dyna X would certainly be a car that almost every participant would love to take home with them, judging by the [...]
CLASSIC DRIVERS OF CALCUTTA (CDC) MARKS ITS 17TH MEET
Classic Drivers of Calcutta (CDC) had its 17th meeting on Sunday, 25th November 2018. A classic car drivers group based out of Kolkata, in the eastern part of India, CDC was started by 3 avid classic car enthusiasts, Souvik Ghose Chaudhuri, Rupak Ghosh and Prithvi Nath Tagore on the 10th of April 2017. Their belief that classic cars need to be driven in order to preserve their roadworthiness as also to create interest amongst the younger generations was the basis for starting CDC. The group firmly believes that the joy of owning classic vehicles is only fully realized when they are driven, just as they were when new.
Since its inception, CDC has had sixteen events with last Sunday’s marking their seventeenth. The events have included drives on national highways, displays at country clubs and regular Sunday town jaunts which are typically followed by members ribbing each other about their cars over sandwiches and coffee! All the meets have been funded by the members individually without any outside financial supp [...]
