FIVA Culture Awards

The winners are revealed

Earlier this year, the FIVA Culture Commission (CC) invited classic vehicle enthusiasts to nominate entrants for a new series of awards to celebrate our cultural and technical mobile heritage.

FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles) announced that the Culture Awards would comprise the following three categories:

RESEARCH DEDICATED SERVICE by INDIVIDUALS or ORGANISATIONS (CLUBS, FEDERATIONS, MUSEUMS), ETC. EDUCATION, TRAINING and the raising of AWARENESS

At the annual FIVA General Assembly in Gibraltar, the CC had the honour of revealing the winners of the three categories. The selection proved to be difficult due to the quality of the submissions, and the CC needed to study all the applications in great detail, with consideration given to a range of factors that included media coverage, involvement of the general public and the participation of younger enthusiasts.

Nataša G. Jerina, CC President, commented, “It was very satisfying and a surprise to receive so many applications in the first year of the award presentation, and the quality of the responses made selecting a winner even more of a challenge.”

The FIVA Culture Co [...]

FIVA World Motorcycle Rally, 27–30 June 2019

Discover Istria, a peninsula shared by Croatia, Slovenia and Italy.
Open to any owner and enthusiast with a motorcycle built prior to 1984, not only FIVA members, this 3-day touring event celebrates the fun of riding classic motorcycles on the road – in this case discovering a hidden gem of the Mediterranean: Istria, a peninsula shared by Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. It is in Istria that the world-renowned truffle can be found, where charming hilltop villages welcome visitors – and it’s easy to enjoy gourmet meals and fine Istrian wines while discovering local secrets, history and spectacular sites. Of particular interest to many will be the third day of the tour, dedicated to Trieste in Italy, where participants can preview the exhibition on Camillo Castiglioni (a huge influence on early BMW) at Palazzo Gopcevich, and ride the legendary climb of the ‘Trieste-Opicina’ race. Starting from Piazza Unità d’Italia in downtown Trieste, the tour will follow the route of the race that ran from 1911 to 1971 and became known as ‘The Uphill Monza’, arriving some 10km later on the Karst plateau, around 330m above sea-level. Participants will be staying at the four-star Hotel Sol Umag on the Croatian coast, among Mediterranean pine trees and a short walk from the many seaside pools, buffets, restauran [...]

A very good question. Well, it hardly comes as a surprise, that Events are one of FIVA’s major focus points as we promote and encourage the active use of our historic vehicles.  The spirit of yesterday’s vehicles on tomorrow’s roads lives on within the Events Commission’s work to help to address FIVA’s broader mission of the protection, preservation and promotion of historic vehicles. It is not just a question of placing events on the FIVA Events Calendar, appointing FIVA Stewards to International category events or even attending exciting Events Commission meetings. Take the recent very successful FIVA World Rally 2018 held in Wales during late August and early September for example.  The UK ANF applied to put this event onto the FIVA Events Calendar three years ago. Indeed in the same year other countries also applied as so many countries are now hoping to host FIVA World Rallies for cars and motorcycles that they are appointed several years ahead. So popular are they that we already have applications for FIVA World Rallies as far ahead as 2022. For the more usual events, both National and International categories, the calendar applications for the following year usually start to come in about 6 months before the New Ye [...]

Reach for your diaries!

FIVA is running three World Rallies in 2019
Following the huge success of FIVA’s annual World Rally for cars in 2018, held this year in the stunning rural scenery of Mid Wales, FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles) has a lot to live up to in 2019. But it might just manage it, as FIVA has announced there will be no fewer than three FIVA World Rallies in 2019 – two for cars and one for motorcycles. All three of these events are open to classic vehicle owners from around the world who enjoy driving their pride and joy, not just members of FIVA. So get out your diaries and make a note of what could be your most exciting few days in the coming year… 22-26 May 2019 – Austria Classic Rallye This 650km regularity run promises the spectacular scenery around Vienna, Burgenland, the Wachau and the Semmering region, and aims to show participants “the great architectural, geographical and cultural diversity of Austria”. Starting at the Kempinski Hotel the day after the Concours D’Elegance, this rally is a fun couple of days whereby the teams are not stressed to the limited but have plenty of time to enjoy the scenery as well. With a very clear road book with pictures and the well know pictograms, the stints of 70 to 150km are over good roads and can be followed also by those who are less familiar with these kinds of regularity rallies. With staff around that speaks English, any question can be answered and since there are a lot of volunteers as well, I’m sure the organization can even find you an on-board translator/guide if you would like to have one. The first day brought us to the Mutianyu Great Wall – To the northeast of Beijing in the Huairou district. Mutianyu Great Wall measures 2,250 meters in length, with an elevation of 535 meters. Studded all along the wall are 22 turreted-fortresses, and the Mutianyu section is accessible by cable cars from below. On the southeast side, there is one general gateway platform connecting three towers together, which is quite rare in the whole Great Wall, and on this platform, a reception was given for the participants, press, and others. The organizers of the Rally also provided a cheque to the chief [...]

‘Best Preserved Vehicle’ award in Japan

FIVA chooses unexpected winner

La Festa Mille Miglia 2018, held in Japan, is now in its 21st year. As you can probably guess from the title, it’s a 1000-mile rally run along the lines of the current Italian 1000 Miglia and this year it started on 19 October in Tokyo, ending up in the same city on Monday 22 October.

A representative from FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles) attended as the FIVA Steward, and for the first time, La Festa Mille Miglia was chosen as one of this year’s 10 events at which a FIVA Best Preserved Vehicle award would be presented.

And the winner of the FIVA Best Preserved Vehicle trophy?

Whilst the FIVA Steward found it unusually hard to separate the many potential contenders, the trophy was finally awarded to the 1951 Panhard Dyna X 110/X85 owned by Yoshinobu and Miyoko Kato. This model of the marque is affectionately known to aficionados as ‘Louis XVth’ thanks to its marvellous baroque curves.

While the Panhard Dyna might perhaps not be every enthusiast’s first choice for competing in a 1000-mile road rally, the diminutive Dyna X would certainly be a car that almost every participant would love to take home with them, judging by the [...]

The Rally for Historical Utilitarian Vehicles called Åkarsvängen 2018,  took place on last 15th September,  started in Södertälje, Sweden, just outside the Scania truck factory. 156 vehicles drove from 100 km, solving problems at some control stations.

This year there has been a significant participation from Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark. All kind of utilitarian vehicles could be seen that day. Firetrucks, ambulances, pick-ups, buses, military vehicles and of course trucks, both small and big, short and long. Trucks for several purposes were driven during this rally, with or without trailers for cargo, logs, fuel, gravel and other transportation uses.

The age of the vehicles displayed varied from 1927 to 1985, and also the age of the participants varied from 5 to 80. Everybody had fun and the organizer, Motorhistoriska Sällskapet, did a good job in promoting the event, so there were a lot of people along the roads taking pictures and waving to the vehicles passing by.FIVA Logo:

This event stayed true to it’s name every step of the way. CLASSIC DRIVERS OF CALCUTTA (CDC) MARKS ITS 17TH MEET
Classic Drivers of Calcutta (CDC) had its 17th meeting on Sunday, 25th November 2018. A classic car drivers group based out of Kolkata, in the eastern part of India, CDC was started by 3 avid classic car enthusiasts, Souvik Ghose Chaudhuri, Rupak Ghosh and Prithvi Nath Tagore on the 10th of April 2017. Their belief that classic cars need to be driven in order to preserve their roadworthiness as also to create interest amongst the younger generations was the basis for starting CDC. The group firmly believes that the joy of owning classic vehicles is only fully realized when they are driven, just as they were when new. Since its inception, CDC has had sixteen events with last Sunday’s marking their seventeenth. The events have included drives on national highways, displays at country clubs and regular Sunday town jaunts which are typically followed by members ribbing each other about their cars over sandwiches and coffee! All the meets have been funded by the members individually without any outside financial supp [...]
