The Commission

Objective

The legislation commission is responsible for achieving FIVA's primary task - that is to maintain the right to preserve and use historic vehicles worldwide.

Background

Historically the commission has concentrated on the effects of EU legislation. Countries outside of Europe have seen the value of this work and now realise the importance of monitoring changes in legislation throughout the world. The commission continues to check and influence EU legislation but also provides a forum for sharing information about global developments.

Current policy areas of interest:

  • Environment policy: legal developments regarding driving restrictions for environmental reasons, chemicals policy, tyre noise
  • Road safety policy: daytime running lights, e-safety, roadworthiness matters
  • Taxation policy: system development internationally
  • Customs policy: EU-regulations, trade restrictions
  • Road access: road charging, telematic applications

Operations

FIVA's legislation commission is supported by the activity of the individual member nations and by EPPA, a firm of consultants based in Brussels and London.

Communication and information:

  • EU-update six times a year distributed to FIVA members
  • Information about national developments once a year via mail and FIVA website
  • Commission meeting reports
  • Maintainance of contacts with related organisations
  • Surveys on statistics, political and legal matters
